By
the end of the movie we all love Hellboy. Even though he
looks like a classical picture of Satan on Steroids, we
have come to appreciate his softer side. Before the
credits roll Hellboy is passionately hugging his normal
looking girlfriend and says, "it's not how you
finish, it's how you start that counts." Hellboy is
an easier sell. He has a foster dad who really cares for
him. His dad doesn't stand passively by when he is
needed. The biblical allusions in the film would not be
picked up by the biblically illiterate mind. The movie
is a universe with cemeteries, crumbling catacombs, pipe
organs and crucifixes everywhere. Contrast the computer
graphics and neat special effects and a happy ending
with the blood, whippings, sweat and torment of "The
Passion." What's the point? I am not suggesting that either filmmaker even knew of the existence of the other. I am suggesting that the Devil has had thousands of years to perfect his own personal strategy. He has always worked long into the night to offer an alternative to God's way. He has done it again. An Academy Award performance. Del Toro said of his film that "it is a riff. It is like having your favourite Frank Sinatra song sung by Tom Waits." Jesus Christ is mentioned frequently in the movie by the way. But only in blasphemy. The satanic icon has always stood against the sacred. |
Make
no mistake about it though. All the muscle, fire power,
glazing lasers and satanic voice-overs aside, the last
few moments of "The Passion of Christ" puts it all in
perspective. As the Camera refocuses on the silence of
the empty tomb, we see a man standing, heading for the
light of the open grave into a world that will never be
the same again. All the made-over demons of hell and the
fantasy filled stories of earth will not repress the
truth. Because of His passion we live and will live
forevermore. It's not how you start. It's how you finish
that really counts after all.
