The Passion of the Christ vs. Hellboy
The Gloves are off. Make no mistake about it. It is not a coincidence that two films with similar motifs are in theatres at the same time. The producers of both films have had little contact or knowledge about the other so the conspiracy is certainly not of their making, the conspiracy I would suggest comes from the very bowels of hell itself, and in such a clever fashion.

While there have been hundreds of films on the life of Jesus there has never been a film to match the pathos, brutality and vigour of The Passion of Christ by Mel Gibson. It has been critiqued sharply by much of the Hollywood media as being too brutal for our society to gaze upon. With cinematic clarity it has allowed us to enter into the sufferings of the Saviour as never before. I recommend this film without reservation.

But wait, there is another film recently released that gives us another saviour. He is everything that Jesus isn't. The film Hellboy is the result of a six year collaboration between Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and director Guillermo del Toro (Cronos, Blade II). Hellboy was originally a comic book back in the 50's about which not many people have heard.
Before Hellboy was made, the director circulated a 12 page memo to every department head and actor to keep them consistent with the Comic Book. The April edition of 'Wired' magazine printed that memo. Very strict rules were given. No red was to be used in the film except for the colour of Hellboy, who was, by the way, 6'5", red, has a tail, sprouts horns on his forehead and has a heart of gold. He is a regular Joe who falls in love and people care about. Blood was kept to a minimum, sometimes a drop, sometimes a beautiful little pool. Hellboy's blood is always black. Any other blood that was spilled was to be candy-coloured blood - not real and never, ever splattered or squibbled. Only one human and several untrained Nazi's will be harmed in the movie. Monsters will be killed by the score. After all, if there is one thing we can agree on in our world -Nazi's were evil. The verdict is still out in popular culture as to whether anything else merits that call. And Monsters? Well, they're evil too and most adolescent boys have killed their share of computer monsters before they leave Jr. High.
