MDM4M recently had a chance to catch up with Flicker Records' Riley Armstrong www.rileyarmstrong.com at 5529 in Michigan and here's what he had to say:
How are you doing?
Good, here in Clarkston, Michigan! Been on the road - me and my van named
Elvis will be travelling through the US and then back up to Canada to hook
up with my supporting band.
What is the transition from band to solo gigs like?
I don't like it. Many like Riley the solo guy, but I miss playing with the fellas - they add so much. Zooks the drummer is so animated and so a part of the show - it's sad not to have them.
How is the driving from town to town?
I don't even have a radio right now, as it was stolen near the end of the
year, so I'm radioless. So I do a lot of thinking, a lot of praying, trying
to find out where God is leading me.
Is it easy to stay focussed in the business of music?
That's tough. I'm always trying to stay focussed, but I tend to get bogged
down in the business. Somebody once told me, "the more you get involved in
music, the less you actually play it". I find that's been true lately, but
I am planning to take time in the spring and dig back into what I love and
be creative again.
Do you look to work with people who share your vision?
I like to work with people that enjoy the show and "get it", which is hard to define.
What motivates you to play live and stay out on the road?
The benefit, the perk of music is that it's the key to the heart, humour is
the key to the heart. It's my excuse to get to know people. My motivation is
for my music to encourage people the way other music has encouraged me. It's
a way to break down the walls, and find out what's important to others.
How do you find ways to connect with people?
We do a lot of things where we get to stick around awhile, like festivals and summer camps. It's sad when we have to leave. It fits my personality. God has created me to love to interact.
