Let me compound the situation a bit for you, if it isn't
already dramatic enough. This is in the era where FOX
News blasts us all day long with reports about lost,
stolen and missing children. This is the age of the
Amber Alert. And though I live in Cornfield,... er
Canton, IL, as a parent the size of the town does not
provide relief. There are crazy people that like corn
and HeeHaw, you know. (side trail - And, yes, we have a
super Kmart in a cornfield. I have NO idea why. I
don't make these decisions - end side trail)
I dashed to the main isle. Nicola, my wife, questioned,
"What is it?" She had not heard the cry. All I think
to say was "SHANNA." After a few seconds I finally saw
her. She looked at me with surprise, panic, relief and
remorse, all in one face. I will never forget that look
on her face. She had strayed just a bit too far, lost
her way, apparently was out of the range of hearing our
voices at the normal shopping-at-Kmart level, and was in
a tizzy, for rizzy.
In her distress she called out. Her voice came to me,
to my ears. I left whatever was "important" at the
time, that which I was focused on, and immediately ran
after her. My instinct was not, "Well, you strayed too
far. You'll just have to find your way back, babe." No.
Quite the opposite. My heart would not be pulsing at a
normal shopping-at-Kmart rate again until she was back,
near us, with us.
Sometimes we get a little cozy with how far we've run
off, too. Don't we? I know I do. And on occasion I
find myself in that same place. PANIC. "DADDY"! .......
he comes running.
Man, I really love God the Father.
