Jerry was 29. Apparently the Guy making the big game
plan in the sky looked at Jerry's stats and realized
that he'd "done all that he could do." It
didn't matter that the team at St. Francis did all that
they could do, because Jerry's ticket was paid for. Time
to go.
My other sister and her husband had purchased a
tear-away calendar for their daughter. Each day has a
scripture from the Bible. On the day of Jerry's accident,
March 3, 2004, the scripture was Matthew 25:23. A
coincidence? If you think so, don't mention it to anyone
in my family. We hold to that scripture for Jerry's
sake. We hold to it for our own sake. The calendar,
though, is King James version, which is even better. It
says, "His lord said unto him, 'Well done, good and
faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few
things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter
thou into the joy of thy lord.'"
Jerry was one of the members on my devotional list. The
list of names that the Lp Devo's go to continues to grow,
even though I've not been publishing them for some time.
I am very glad that Jerry was a recipient. Along with
other personal interaction, I feel that I made an impact
in his life through these devo's. I started this thing
to encourage folks in the Word. From some of Jerry's
responses, I know that it accomplished just that.
Another reason I need to do these devotionals is...
because I can. God has given each of us gifts. Every
one of you has tools in your toolbox that were issued
the day of your birth. I know I've not always been
faithful to "do all that I could do." I've
had seasons myself where I buried my gifts, just as the
evil servant from this parable did (Read Matthew
25:14-30). In more recent years I have felt strongly
that I need to be operating in the talents and gifts God
has given to me. After days such as March 3, 2004, I
have even more of a sense of urgency to "do all
that I can do."
Its a fact. One day the physicians will say to my
relatives, "We did all we could do," to spare
my life. My prayer is that God will be saying the same
of me. As he said to Jerry that day, I hope to hear,
"WELL DONE, you did all that you could do. Come on,
now, let's partay." My encouragement to you is that
you would strive for the same.
This devotional is dedicated to Jer, as my sister
affectionately nicknamed him. He was a great brother,
friend and encourager. In my human-ness, I miss him.
