"His master replied, Well
done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful
with a few things; I will put you in charge of many
things. Come and share your master's happiness!"
- Matthew 25:23 (NIV)
A month ago I received a phone call that is forever
burned into my memory. My mother was calling from the
emergency room of St. Francis Hospital. The family was
aware that my brother-in-law, Jerry Schleich, had been
in an automobile accident. Mom was the first to arrive,
the first to be whisked into a room, to be told that
ominous line, "We did all we could do."
It is interesting, this thing called life. Equally
interesting is our faith. We know the game plan. It's a
handful of years here on earth then we make our way into
the eternal destiny we've chosen. Its not a secret.
That's what the Bible is all about. One big plan. Our
days here are few. King David points that out in a verse
I've used previously as an Lp Devo, Psalms 39:4,
"Show me, O Lord, my life's end and the number of
my days; let me know how fleeting is my life."
Life on earth is a simple concept. There is a beginning.
There is life. There is an end. Period. We know tomorrow
is not guaranteed. Still, when a life ends it is
difficult to swallow. These verses and concepts do
penetrate eventually, but initially, I have to admit,
they're don't seem to take away the sting.
