Kutless: Interviewed
Kutless on stage
After catching Kutless' "Sea of Faces" show in Canton, MI the night before, I got a call from James Mead of 'Kutless'. Here's how the conversation went…

MDM4M: Thanks for taking time out to talk to us. I know that the staff of 'Modern Disciple Magazine For Men' are really excited about the newest album of yours: 'Sea of Faces'. How are the 'duties' for the album divided up among the band?

James Mead: Jon Micah writes all the lyrics. The band writes the music together. I play guitar, Kyle Zeigler plays bass, Jon Micah Sumrall is lead vocals, Ryan Shrout plays guitar as well, and Kyle Mitchell plays the drums.

MDM4M: I really like the lyrics in the song 'New Years' Vow' from your self-titled first release:
I'm crying out to You now
As I make my New Year's vow
I'll tell You I love You
And I'll honor You somehow
Hear my promise to You in my New Year's vow
Band, posing I give You all of me
You'll be all of my life
And I'll never think twice
To do all that You have for me
In my New Year's vow

What was Jon Micah referring to in those lyrics?

JM: Jon Micah was referring to how in Old Testament times a man's word was to be taken seriously, and a vow or oath between yourself and the Lord was taken very seriously. He was thinking about how we brush issues under the mat. We say things, promise things, and he compared those things to a New Year's vow. People typically drop New Year's vows within 2 weeks after making them. We as Christians say "Lord, I'll do it with your power" and then we forget about it and try to do it in our own power. The song is about actually doing for God what we say we're going to.
