Modern Disciple recently had a pow wow with Canadian rockers FLINT. We chatted about the new album, the video for the first single 'Ahh' and their role in the Body. These are three guys that are actually out there doing something for the Kingdom! Oh yeah and they ROCK!! Here we go…
How did you come together as a band?
Marc - "Jay and Gary have been playing together forever and I've been playing with garbage bands for about the same length of time. A mutual friend asked if I wanted to play in this band called Flint because they might be looking for another drummer. I was intrigued. I was in another band at the time so I went to go see these guys at a festival and knew right away they were great song writers & of course really hot! I didn't want to cause a stir so I politely emailed them and said 'ya know if you're ever looking for a drummer...'
Next thing you know, we go out for a coffee, hang out, instant friendship, jammed, did some cowbell/roto-tom fills, and we knew this was the start of something special."

Jay - "Shooting the video was certainly one of our favorite experiences so far as musicians. Gavin and the crew at
Mimetic Productions, who have worked with Third Eye Blind, Switchfoot and Vanessa Carleton, are the true professionals who made us all feel quite comfortable. The extremely long hours over the 2-day shoot were exhausting but at the same time very rewarding. We had a blast and got to know some really cool people. It's also quite humbling to see yourself on screen and know that you had very little to do with how cool the video looks. It was also a chance to act like a complete idiot as long as the director didn't see us."
Gary - "It was one of the most fun and memorable times of my life. It was at times boring, difficult or down right embarrassing. But, mostly a lot of fun. It reminded me why I want to be a musician and not an actor! We also began some wonderful friendships with the incredibly talented people involved."
Marc - "We had an absolute blast! Incredibly long days but with great people so that made it much more enjoyable. The second day of shooting was much more relaxing than the first. The first day we had to play that stinkin' song at least 60 times but the second day, whew, Jay & I had to pretend to play chess & drink coffee for 9 hours. '"Much easier."

Gary - "This song, to be honest, was written out of frustration. We were doing what we felt, and still feel, we should be doing. Using the gift of music to the best of our abilities and taking it to the highest standard that we can. Some people, specifically in the Church, feel that rock music has no value and that playing in certain venues produces no good results. I beg to differ. I think if God has given us a gift, and even more importantly, a huge passion, He expects us to use it. If He could use a talking donkey, He can use us. I don't think it's any secret how rock music can influence lives, specifically young people, too often in a negative and sometimes destructive way. So, why wouldn't God use music to influence in a positive and constructive way? After all, He created music in the first place. And venues...Jesus said to go into all the world, key word being "all". I know we have clever little sayings on the signs outside our churches or on our bumper stickers, but believe it or not, that's probably not going to entice the club regulars to come out on Sunday morning. Now, I'm not trying to be overly sarcastic, but, if God has called some of his children to use a gift He has given and to go through doors He has opened and to reach out to people who He has died for, what human has the authority to say to another part of the body of Christ that God can't use you there? Who then will reach out to this group of people with the kindness and love that can only come from God? It has been my experience that we are far too concerned with appearances and offending someone and that is the mentality that is sucking the life out of the Church. We simply would rather do absolutely nothing than run into some sort of friction. Jesus didn't ignore the tax collectors and prostitutes, He died for them.
So, after all this rambling, what's "Ahh..." about? It's about three Jesus Freaks who are trying to do what God wants them to do, regardless of the consequences of men."
