An invitation worth considering?

The premise of this book is pretty simple: what if a man had a chance to spend a couple of hours over dinner with Jesus? Yes, this idea has been considered time and again, and this book is not the most original thing to come along in the modern age. And yet, I was curious to see if David Gregory could pull it off. My opinion is that he has given us a book that could open some conversations, and that's a pretty decent accomplishment.

Here's the set up:

"The mysterious envelope arrives on Nick Cominsky’s desk amid a stack of credit card applications and business-related junk mail. Although his seventy-hour workweek has already eaten into his limited family time, Nick can’t pass up the opportunity to see what kind of plot his colleagues have hatched.

"The normally confident, cynical Nick soon finds himself thrown off-balance, drawn into an intriguing conversation with a baffling man who appears to be more than comfortable discussing everything from world religions to the existence of heaven and hell. And this man who calls himself Jesus also seems to know a disturbing amount about Nick’s personal life."

As I said, the premise is simple and the story line is fairly obvious, but it is the execution that pulls off a decent read. You already have a pretty good idea of what will happen, right? Nick is going to gain a new perspective on who Jesus really is and learn that he needs to be saved. This could get corny pretty fast. Thankfully, the author develops the main character well, keeps injecting humour, and never lets things get too heavy.

Because the story is engaging and the delivery is not heavy or threatening, this short book will be a very good tool in your hands if you get an opportunity to lend it to a coworker or fellow student. The method employed for delivery of the Gospel is instructive and could certainly help you to feel more at ease with evangelistic opportunities. Don't look for solid theology or serious apologetics between its covers, but it is very accessible for anyone in western culture from the ages of twenty to fifty.
