Why Should You Take Cod Liver Oil?
by Jeff Consiglio
I consider cod liver oil to be one of the most important nutritional
supplements a person can take. It's especially valuable to growing
children. Grandma was right on this one!
Westernized people consume a dangerously inadequate amount of Omega-3,
a healthy and essential fat found only in fish oils and a few other
foods. Meanwhile, our intake of Omega-6, another fatty acid found
in corn, soy, sunflower and other vegetable oils, is much too high.
The ideal ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 should be 1 to 1. That is, God
designed our bodies and brains to operate best on roughly equal amounts
of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. But these days, most people ingest
a ratio more like 20 to 1!
The best way to restore a proper ratio of omega-6 & 3 fatty acids is
to greatly reduce your intake of refined vegetable oils, which contain
excessive omega-6, and to increase your intake of cold water fish and cod
liver oil, which are high in omega-3.
Flaxseed oil is currently in vogue as a source of omega-3, but I feel its
high omega-6 content makes it vastly inferior to cod liver oil, when it
comes to increasing one's intake of omega-3. Besides that, the most beneficial
forms of Omega-3 are DHA and EPA, which can ONLY be found in fish.
Most people are already aware of the positive contribution omega-3 oils have
on cardiovascular health. But that's only scratching the surface of what
omega-3 does for us. Omega-3 also raises levels of certain neurotransmitters
in the brain which help people think clearly and avoid depression. I'll bet
the makers of Zoloft and Prozac don't want that information getting out!
And if your child is "acting up," it could be due to a deficiency of omega-3.
Though some "expert" at your child's school will probably try to slap the
label of "ADD" on the poor kid. You'll then be advised to put your child on
the glorified legal speed known as Ritalin.
Getting back to this cod liver oil thing…the vitamin A and D in Cod Liver
oil is also critical for the uptake of calcium and other minerals into the
bones. This is an especially important benefit for children, to ensure their
bones fully develop.
Incomplete bone development causes children to grow
into adults with a multitude of physical deformities:
· Incomplete development of the nasal passages - Resulting in narrow
nasal passages and subsequent breathing problems.
· Incomplete development of the jaw bone - Causes teeth to come in
crowded and overlapping each other, because the jawbone is too small to
accommodate the incoming teeth. The modern diet is so deficient in minerals
and natural fat-soluble vitamins like A and D, that there is a virtual
epidemic of this problem. It's why an entire new branch of dentistry had
to be created, called orthodontics. A return to the nutrient dense diets
of our ancestors would put all the orthodontists out of business!
· Incomplete development of female pelvic girdle - Causes girls to enter
into womanhood with narrow pelvic girdles; resulting in very painful childbirth.
Giving birth used to be a natural process. Now it's become a "medical procedure"
largely because the impoverished diet of modern females does not provide the
nutrition required for full development of the pelvic region.
Do NOT get cod liver oil in capsules, which can be permeable to air, oxygen
and light - which will turn your cod liver oil rancid. Purchase only liquid cod
liver oil in a bottle. Keep it in your refrigerator as well.
Some natural health experts recommend certain high priced cod liver oils on
the theory they're more likely to be free of mercury and other toxins, than
cheaper brands. But mercury is water soluble, and is therefore not found in
an oil-based product like cod liver oil. Additionally, there are very strict
federal regulations in most countries, which ensure cod liver oil is free of
contaminants. So don't let fear cause you to overspend on cod liver oil. The
cheap stuff works as well and is also just as safe as the expensive brands.
