Safe in His Arms

Patrick White

graphic artist

Interviewed by Ryan Richardson

As you know, Modern Disciple loves and supports the arts - poetry, music and graphic art.

As such, we were privileged to speak with graphic artist, Patrick White, after viewing his work "Safe In His Arms". Patrick graciously gave us the background on this moving piece.

Modern Disciple: How long have you been a graphic artist?

Patrick White: Since graduating in 1986, I've been doing graphics work off and on for approximately 14 years. I worked for a small ad agency for 9 months, then freelanced for a couple of years. After 6 years in a clerical government position, I was able to get some retraining in multimedia technology which led to my current position as a in-house designer for a professional services firm.

MD: Where did you study?

PW: Advertising and Graphic Design Diploma from Humber College in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. Multimedia certificate from Digital Media Studios. Studied privately at Angel Art Studio and with Bibby Studio in Toronto.

MD: What was the inspiration to create this work?

PW: Some friends lost a child at birth. At the funeral, I got this image of that child being welcomed into Christ's presence with mixed emotions. Jesus knew the pain of the parents, and possibly the lost potential that this child could have had on a fallen world. Yet, He is the God of all comfort in the midst of our suffering. It also reminded me of the promise that one day we will be with Him and there will be no more pain, no more sorrow, no more tears.

MD: How have people responded?

PW: People of different faith backgrounds without knowing the history respond in many ways. Some with joy, some with empathy. Others with indifference, yet some with intense emotion. It speaks differently to different people.

MD: What is the most satisfying part of being an artist?

PW: The ability to share the view from my mind's eye to others and experiencing the reaction from their perspective. I'm also amazed at the handiwork of the original Creator - the originator of our talents and gifts - in everyday events like the sun breaking through clouds or light reflected in my children's eyes.

MD: How can someone order the print of "Safe In His Arms" from you?

PW: If anyone is interested, they can e-mail me for details at pwhite625@yahoo.ca
