Building 429 Interview - Saturday, July 17, 2004

Modern Disciple had the privilege of spending some time on the phone with Jason Roy, lead singer for Word/Warner Brothers new band, Building 429. I fired off questions at a rapid pace, and Jason came back with some well-thought out, heartfelt responses. In the process, I re-learned the importance of choosing my words carefully…

Modern Disciple: How are you able to balance being a husband and dad with being on the road?

Jason Roy: One of the absolute hardest things about being road dogs for me is the process of learning how to set limits and how to focus all my affections and attention on my wife and son, while I am at home. I have to let them know that they are loved and important and that I want to be there more than anything else. It's a challenge - you get on the road and get homesick, but, thank God, all of us married wives who were, we like to call them, senders. They're whole-heartedly behind us, and they know that we're designed to do this.

MD: Can you give a brief history of the band?

JR: We started in 1999, in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Scotty and I got together and played, and enjoyed each other's passion for the Lord and musicianship, and decided "hey, let's start a band". God just brought the other guys to us. In the first year as the band, we played 100 - 150 shows as an independent band. We just always believed, "let's just do what we were called to do." God has been faithful to provide everything that we needed.

MD: How did you come to the attention of Word and Warner Brothers Records?

JR: I like to say that the music industry is all about relationships. First and foremost, you can't do this without a relationship with the Lord that is serious and real. He leads you to the right people, and you don't even know that you are doing it. We went to Nashville to do a photo shoot, so our photographer, Culley Ingram, brought her husband, Jason Ingram, a worship leader, to help her with the shoot. We really hit it off, he took our independent disc to his manager, we signed with them, and then we were talking to a number of labels.
